About Us at HART |
||||
HART was set up in March of 2009 when we recognised the need for an animal charity based in Pokhara. We realised that the street dog population was nowhere near so high as in Kathmandu, but there were nevertheless many who needed our help. In our very early days we discovered that rabies was a much more serious problem than we had anticipated.We managed to find a chicken farm that was eminently suitable for conversion to kennels and work got underway to clean everything up, re-lay the floor with concrete and build kennel blocks and operating theatre whilst surveys were being carried out to ascertain the needs of animals in the surrounding areas. Funding for this was principally from HAT (UK) and from B & J Charitable Trust, both British based.![]() Five chicken sheds have been converted into kennels, offices and an operating theatre. ![]() |
![]() Competent staff were slowly gathered and before too long we had an excellent vet in Dr Hem Awasthi whose enthusiasm and expertise are largely responsible for much of the great veterinary work that has been carried out by HART. In the photo above he is pictured (right) giving thorough practical training to his successor, Dr Mohan Acharya, another utterly dedicated vet who has already proven his worth as a fine ambassador for HART, attending important veterinary conferences on our behalf.![]() Dr Hem at a veterinary treatment camp. ![]() HART's all-round general helper, Rabi, is starting to prove his worth in the operating theatre. |
HART’s Board Members are, as the country’s government requires, all Nepalese citizens and are an eclectic mix from various professions ranging from English and law lecturers to the head of a Buddhist monastery.Chairman – Dibya Kumar BaralVice-Chairman – Anita GurungSecretary – Pabitra Raj BaralTreasurer – Hari Bhakta SubediMembers – Rajen GurungLama Gorpal Gurung RinpocheKrishna Prasad Gurung
![]() HART’s three Co-Founders were Barbara Webb, Jim Pearson and Juliette Cunliffe, but now Juliette is the only active Founder, the other two having gone their separate way. HART is now heading along the right lines and is happy to work with and to share information with any other charitable concern whose genuine interest is that of animal welfare. However, we only wish to work and to share our interests with charities who work entirely within Nepal's Government guidelines. We are already in close contact with several government departments with whom we are planning to work closely from now on.HART's current adminstration is not aiming for kudos, simply to help the animals of Nepal.Our Veterinary Advisors are: Dr Hem Awasthi & Dr Sushil Paudel ![]() Himalayan Animal Rescue Team is a Member of WSPA, which is always generous with its advice, for which we are most grateful. |
